I hope I am not the only person that suffers from this problem. I can write a character’s background, quirks, likes, dislikes, and anything else about them all day, but I dread names. Sometimes I’ll take hours just messing around with names until I find just the right one. Has anyone else had that problem?
I’ll chew on a few ideas for a while, mess around with a few name generators I can find on Google for inspiration, yet I’m never satisfied. One thing I try to avoid is having too many characters that start with the same letter. I learned that from an editor and changed around a bunch of names when I realized the mistake I was making. Yet then I’ll think of a perfect sounding name that starts with “A” when I already have two main characters with names that start with that letter.
I try all sorts of things. Name generators, anagrams, searching names by their meaning, picking names out of other words. It can be so frustrating. After a while, I’ll just throw a random name out there to get the task out of the way and revisit it later once I’ve figured something out. Then suddenly I never do and that name just grows on me. For example, one of the main places in Paracus is a city called Oestermar. I originally put that in as a placeholder until I could figure out something better. Then as I continued to write, I started to like the name so I decided to keep it. Oestermar is a port city, and the name reminded me of oysters as it is pronounced Ost-er-mar. It just stuck.
Has anyone else ever had this sort of problem? It’s interesting how you’ll anguish over such a small detail and then you let it sit for a while and it ultimately solves itself or the answer just pops into your head of its own volition.
